Joy of Travel

Welcome to my travel blog. From time to time, it is my intention to post pictures and short narrative accounts from my travels, mostly in Scandinavia. Intended primarily for friends and family, I hope that anyone who might stumble across these ramblings will find them interesting. Occasional comments from the outside lane of the communal body politic might also attest to the overwhelmingly liberating and life-affirming act which is international travel. Rick Steves has called travel a "political act," and so it surely is. We begin, then, with the photos that accompany this posting. One of the 11 mid-generation ships (Nordlys) of the Norwegian "Hurtigruten" coastal fleet between Bergen and Kirkenes is pictured during a stop in Trondheim. In the distance, just to the right of the ship is seen the spire from the medieval Nidaros Cathedral dedicated to St. Olaf. Below (left) is a photo taken in Iceland in 2009 showing an underground river of glacial melt water as it emerges from the middle of an ancient lava field to form a magical waterfall. (Click on the photos for enlarged versions.)
